As a mid-week treat, my partner Mike and I decided to visit the Lamb at Edgmond for a meal and few drinks. Upon entrance it was clear how well managed the venue is and all staff operating in a very safe environment. As we were shown to our table, I couldn’t help but notice the new courtyard with a fantastic feature wall, it all looked so trendy and a real eye catcher.
Looking through the menu, we both commented on the how much choice there was, everything from steaks, burgers, pizzas, pastas and a fantastic choice of traditional favourites. There is also a great seafood and fish selection if you like your fish.
For starters I opted for the breaded brie wedges and Mike the chicken and apricot terrine. Both large portions and well presented, we eagerly tucked in. My brie wedges sat on a bed of rocket with beetroot puree, beetroot chunks and sugared walnuts. The combination of flavours and textures was a pure delight, the brie was warm and velvety as it oozed out of the breadcrumbs, it was simply perfect in every way and a real taste sensation.
Mike’s terrine was a combination of chunky chicken pieces, leeks, and apricots, accompanied with a side salad, sweet piccalilli and two pieces of warm ciabatta. I couldn’t help but try some, I loved all the array of flavours and textures, meaty, fruity and tangy with the piccalilli, again, it all went together superbly. Another fantastic, and large starter.
For mains Mike had opted for the 8oz sirloin and I chose the black and blue burger. They certainly had the WOW factor for presentation and looked incredible.
The steak was accompanied with a salad wedge with a topping of choice being Moydens Wrekin blue cheese, hand-cut chips, roasted mushroom and cooked tomato, with a blue cheese sauce added. Requested to be cooked medium it was spot on, exactly how we both like it cooked, it was chargrilled and truly was cooked to perfection, tasty, juicy it was just absolutely incredible, so much so I had to ask the waiter who was the supplier, locally sourced from Edwards’s meats just outside Newport. Another showstopper was the sauce, so much flavour, creamy and delicious, I often cook my own blue cheese at home, and it’s never been this good. The chips were also pure delight and must be triple cooked, so soft, and fluffy with a crispy outer, I was constantly pinching a chip and dipping it in the blue cheese sauce, I will be choosing this next time! It really was a faultless dish in every way and must be the best steak either of us had tasted in a long time.
On to my black and blue burger, a chargrilled brioche bun with lettuce, tomato, gherkins an 8oz prime beef burger with thick smoked bacon and melted Wrekin blue cheese and mustard mayo, served with French fries and coleslaw.
Despite me loving blue cheese and burgers, I was a bit apprehensive upon ordering this as Ive had black and blue burgers in the past (at different venues) and the burger has been overpowered by the blue cheese, thankfully this was not the case here. The burger was just so meaty and tender, not over seasoned or full of anything but fantastic succulent beef. The thick bacon with melted Wrekin blue on top was superb, with all the salad and the chargrilled bun I thoroughly enjoyed every mouthful, we really had chosen two fantastic mains, my only comment was I would probably ask for the homecooked chips with my burger next time as they were so nice, thankfully Mike loved my French fries and was happy to share.
Sitting back with very full tummies and a gorgeous glass of Sauvignon Blanc, we debated a dessert. With it being a very warm evening, I thought a selection of luxury farm ice creams would be the ideal finish and Mike couldn’t resist the sound of the pear and caramel cheesecake with salted caramel and ginger ice cream.
The choice of ice creams was quite extensive, choc chunk, mint, cookie dough, mixed berries, strawberry, vanilla and salted caramel and ginger. I went for chock chunk, mint and cookie dough, a great combination and arrived as a sundae topped with shortbread biscuits. The ice-creams were fantastic especially the mint, I’d forgotten how much I love mint choc-chip ice-cream.
Mike’s cheesecake was equally as tasty and again a burst of well-chosen flavours, caramel, pear, gorgeous moist cheesecake and the salted caramel and ginger ice-cream, so many flavours that all just gelled together to form perfection.
We really enjoyed every course and struggled to decide if the steak or burger was a better choice with them both being so outstanding, what is for sure though we will be back to taste more of the fantastic food and drinks on offer at The Lamb at Edgmond.
Despite so many covid setbacks and closures over 2020/2021, it really is great to see Lance, Debbie, and the team at the Lamb inn at Edgmond are continuing to bring fantastic service and good quality food in a beautiful surrounding! https://www.facebook.com/thelambedgmond
